If I could summarize Pind Balluchi at Lajpat Nagar in one line, it would be ‘Good old Punjabi food without burning a hole in your pocket’. Yes, it is cheap, excellent & very tasty food. Once I was part of a party of about 16-17 people there and the host actually paid only around 2000/- for all our food!! I have been there on several occasions and I could say very easily that average per head never goes above 150 bucks. That’s too cheap for good food in Delhi.

As the name suggests, Pind Balluchi, has been made like a Pind (Village). So there is a village chaupal (meeting place), haveli (house), gufa (cave), village well and even a (plastic) tree simulating stylised rusticity. The entrance itself is through a grand haveli-like-gate and the guard there would greet in Punjabi. The whole atmosphere is village like with constant chattering and tempting smells of delicious Punjabi food. The cutlery is also along the theme with big steel plates and large copper like glasses. It surely symbolises the return of Indian cuisine to main stage.

To the food now. It is one restaurant which has very good vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian options to go for. For vegetarians, go for ‘Sarson ka saag’ (curried mustard leaves) along with ‘Makke ki roti’ (corn bread), it is totally divine. Other good dishes to have are ‘Dal Tadka’ (lentils with a spicy tempering) and ‘Butter Paneer Masala’ (a bright colored, creamy and light buttery flavored cheese dish). For non-vegetarians, go for ‘Tangri Kebab’(chicken leg piece marinated in curd, ginger garlic & spices – gone through the tandoor) for starters. Go for ‘Dhaba Meat’ (Indian-style-roadside-eatery-type mutton) in main course, it is really wonderful at Pind Baluci. Accompany it with ‘Mutton Biryani’ (rice and mutton cooked with Indian spices). The mutton biryani is served in a ‘handi’ (Indian style earthen pot) – and it tastes very spicy and tasty. Do not forget to have ‘lassi’ (skimmed curd) with the meal – it is served in large copper glasses, the traditional Punjabi style.

Overall, you will feel satisfied with food at this restaurant and your pocket will not feel light after coming out. One thing to note is that avoid going on weekends – it gets very crowded and you may have to wait a lot. The service also degrades at that time. It is open all days except Tuesdays.

Determined to showcase Indian handloom textiles while providing equitable employment to traditional artisans, Bissell established Fabindia in 1960 in order to fuse the best aspects of East/West collaboration.
Fabindia sources its products from over 15000 craft persons and artisans across India. We support the craft traditions of India by providing a market and thereby encourage and sustain rural employment. Today we have retail outlets in all major cities of India – 80 at last count – in addition to international stores in Rome, Italy; Dubai, UAE and Guangzhou, China.

Most people I know who have bought stuff from there are fairly happy at their purchases, and many of them do not even know about the support to Indian artisans. Fabindia retails a range of products such as kurtas, shirts, pyjamas, churidars, traditional jackets, stole, salwars, ladies pants, tops, skirts, capris, dupattas, kaftans, bedspreads, cushion covers, pillow cases, quilts, tablecloths, mats, napkins, baby bedding, curtains, etc.

How many people are there in Delhi who would not have heard of the Surjakund Mela ? A fair number of people would have also taken the trouble to go to the Surajkund complex of Haryana tourism during the time of the mela, attracted by the cultural experience. The Mela also promises to be a great experience of foreign tourists who get a sample of the Indian countryside not far from Delhi.
Reaching there is not difficult, one needs to head onto Mathura road till just before Badarpur border and ask for directions from there. It is not very far from there, and is located in Faridabad district. The Mela is organized ever year from Feb 1 – Feb 15 and begins from 9.30 a.m. and closes at 5.30 p.m. each evening, and has been in existence from 1981; the fair celebrates its 28th version in 2008. The Mela has been the brainchild of Harayana tourism as a way to showcase the cultural experience of the Indian rural area, focusing on a different state everytime, and has been a spectacular success.
The mela has some specific objectives, such as:
1. To create a rural ambience for the foreign and domestic tourist to see
2. To educate patrons both from abroad, urban centres and educational institutes about the fascinating technique and skills involved in craft creation
3. To introduce crafts and craftspersons directly to the buyers and help them find their patrons
4. To Identify, nurture and preserve languishing crafts of the country and save it for posterity
In addition to the culture, the fortnight long celebrations also come as a food festival. Some of the popular food traditions from Punjab come at the Punjabi ‘Rasoi’. South Indian delicacies come in from South Indian Section. Popular Chinese and snack foods also arrive for the event along with a special stalls where patrons are introduced to the traditional foods and sweet meats of the selected theme State.
Skilled artisans from all over the country display the rich crafts tradition of India in the typical setting of a rural Indian marketplace. Cultural programmes and rural cuisine are also a part of this colourful fair. The fair also provides a meeting ground for the talented painters, weavers, sculptors and craftsmen form all over India who exhibit their creations and the arts and crafts lovers who flock here to admire and purchase these creations.

Some beautiful photos of the Mela at this link.
